Macroinvertebrate interactions stimulate decomposition in WWTP effluent-impacted aquatic ecosystems

چکیده

Abstract Aquatic ecosystems worldwide are impacted by an influx of nutrients and sludge particles from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, leading to a degradation benthic habitats loss associated macroinvertebrate taxa. Hence, in WWTPs, only few tolerant taxa remain. These detritivore play important role the organic matter, biotic interactions between these may either enhance or reduce rate degradation. Therefore, aim present study was examine if interaction asellids tubificids, both highly abundant systems WWTP effluent, enhances sludge. To this end, growth reproduction taxa, nutrient concentrations overlying water were measured 28-day laboratory experiment, subjecting 4 treatments: control without macroinvertebrates, tubificid, asellid, asellid + tubificid treatment. Sludge degradation, phosphate concentration enhanced when tubificids jointly present, whereas hampered comparison our results suggest that detritivores stimulate thus possibly mitigating negative impacts WWTP-derived on environment.

Patterns of Herbivory and Decomposition in Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems

Describing the relative magnitude and controls of herbivory and decomposition is important in understanding the trophic transference, recycling, and storage of carbon and nutrients in diverse ecosystems. We examine the variability in herbivory and decomposition between and within a wide range of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We also analyze how that variability is associated with differen...

Helminthic Parasites as Heavy Metal Bioindicators in Aquatic Ecosystems

Abstract         Heavy metals have raised one of the most important problems in ecology and organisms life especially human being and animals. A variety of indicators including tissues of fish, birds and sediment have been used recently to measure the aquatic pollution with heavy metals. The aim of this study was to search the published articles in Iran a...

Electrochemical disinfection of secondary wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent.

In this work the electrochemical disinfection of the effluent of a secondary wastewater treatment plant is investigated. In the experimental work, performed on-site with real effluents of the WWTP located in Vuelta Ostrera (Cantabria, Spain), boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes were employed. The initial concentration of E. coli in the effluent of the WWTP varied in the range 1.3 x 10⁴-5.2 x 1...

Mitigating cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms in aquatic ecosystems impacted by climate change and anthropogenic nutrients.

Mitigating the global expansion of cyanobacterial harmful blooms (CyanoHABs) is a major challenge facing researchers and resource managers. A variety of traditional (e.g., nutrient load reduction) and experimental (e.g., artificial mixing and flushing, omnivorous fish removal) approaches have been used to reduce bloom occurrences. Managers now face the additional effects of climate change on wa...
